THE EXHIBITIONS

make general comments on the relationship to the transformative process and its unfolding. However, I consciously refrain from a more detailed interpretation of specific paintings.

EARLY PAINTING

I plan, as mentioned above, to publish this exhibition during the year 2004. The purpose with showing my earlier works is, among other things, to give a picture of my development as an artist and to draw parallels to later paintings. The number of works, made up to 1990, is very large and is dominated by simpler sketches made with painting knife on paper. A smaller number, primarily made during the latter part of the period, are what I call 'paintings', that is, more complicated works. In this exhibition, these paintings and a selection of sketches will be shown.

TRANSFORMATION - Parts 1 and 2

Development and Transformation.

The exhibition "Transformation" describes a development and transformation process, and it is made up of a total of 82 paintings in chronological order, that are divided into the following sections:

1. The Beginning

- 2 Paintings

2. Fragments

- 24 Paintings

3. Transition

- 14 Paintings

4. Chaos and Structure

- 14 Paintings

5. Descent

- 21 Paintings

6. The Center

- 7 Paintings

What is important to realize is that I never intended to treat the subject of 'transformation', or any other subject, or for that matter to do a specific exhibition. The thought of dividing the paintings into separate sections was not a preconceived notion either. I 'just painted'. On the other hand, I was very clear with the fact that these paintings were separate from my other works, and I took a very conscious decision to paint in a larger format (association: to present) and to use age-resistant cardboard (association: to preserve). When painting, I was totally focused on the painting I was working on for the moment, to look at finished ones did not interest me. When I finished a painting, I immediately became focused on the next one to be made - it was there that the tension and the excitement was. The understanding of what I had done, what the paintings were about, and that they should be divided into sections came afterwards. It was a very fascinating experience for my intellect and consciousness to realize that there are other forces than me directing what I do! Development and transformation is in other words a largely unconscious process. It works in concert with consciousness, that is me, and without my active participation there is no change. Wrestling with this process during all these years have resulted in a drastic change for me as a person. I am thinking of a change in what I do, what I feel, how I perceive, how I think - in other words change in its most fundamental sense. The concrete meaning of this is of course very personal, and I believe this is of interest only to me and concerns only me. What is important in this context is to establish the existence of this change on the personal level. The interesting thing with my paintings is that they act on a collective level: All the personal facts and implications have been filtered away and what is left is a story of common interest.

The core of the transformation process can not be observed, however, it can be inferred from its manifestations, for example through tangible personal experiences, or through more abstract activities, such as painting. This is basically about mysterious forces, elusive by nature and difficult to observe. Another manifestation of transformative forces are found in our dreams at night, mine, as well as yours. For my part, there is an interesting pattern regarding dreams: The beginning of the work with "Transformation" coincided with a substantial increase in the amount of dream material produced at night, and this increased level persisted throughout the period working with the first two sections, "The Beginning" and "Fragments". Apparently, the increased activity in our observable, daytime world had its equivalence in an inner, more hidden world. When the work with "Transition" begun, there was a tangible decrease in dreams, that once again increased when "Chaos and Structure" was begun, now reaching an unsurpassed level. After that, during the work with the sections "Descent" and "The Center", the pattern changed and there was a continuous increase in dream activity, finally reaching storm level. When further
